A politician who represents the Rockaways wants his Sandy-battered district to be included in the state's buyout program.
State Senator James Sanders Jr. said that low-lying homes that were built on flood plains were crippled during the storm and probably would not be able to withstand another superstorm.
He also said that many residents in the area are still struggling to rebuild, while others have abandoned their properties.
"They should have never been built in the first place, but now that they have been built, we should make people whole, buy it from them, move them, because it would be cheaper in the long run," Sanders said.
On Thursday, the city started demolishing homes on Staten Island as part of the buyout program.
A total of 164 homeowners have offers on the table, and 25 of them set to close next week.
