A man accused of kidnapping, raping and robbing a woman at gunpoint after pretending to be a cab driver in the French Quarter earlier this year was indicted Thursday by a state grand jury.
Curtis Hawthorne was arrested on Oct. 7 after police said he was linked by DNA to the Feb. 9 crime. The grand jury charged him with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery. Orleans Criminal District Chief Judge Camille Buras set Hawthorne's bond at $2.25 million.
Prosecutors say Hawthorne picked up a 21-year-old woman in the 300 block of Royal Street who was looking to hail a taxi back to her hotel around 2:30 a.m.
Once she was in the car, Hawthorne drove to another location, brandished a handgun and demanded she undress, before raping her, the police report said.
Hawthorne also stole the woman's purse, which contained her iPhone, cash and credit cards, the report said. He drove to another location and dropped the woman off, before fleeing.
The woman underwent a rape examination. The results came back on March 26 implicating Hawthorne, and on April 2 police got an arrest warrant. On Oct. 7, police picked him up near the intersection of Dreux Avenue and Venus Street in Gentilly. Since then, he has been held in Orleans Parish Prison.
He has previously been arrested on drug charges, domestic battery and illegal possession of stolen items.
