Robert Cedeno had recently been assigned to the 66th Precinct 16th Ave. near 59th St.in Brooklyn.
The cop who took his own life outside a Brooklyn police station was a rising star in the NYPD who was working toward his detective shield, police sources said Friday.
The officer, identified by police sources as Robert Cedeno, 41, shot himself in the head Thursday night just steps away from his new post at the 66th Precinct station house in Borough Park.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Cedeno had just been assigned to the police station on 16th Ave. near 59th St. and was going to receive training to become a detective.
"He had been transferred to the stationhouse that past Monday," Kelly said. "It was his fourth tour."
Kelly explained Cedeno helped make an arrest in a domestic violence case Thursday afternoon, but left the stationhouse about 4 p.m.
When he didn't return after an hour, cops started looking for him.
"Officers were looking for him but they were not certain what kind of car he drove," Kelly said. "They found the car at about 5:30 p.m. and look in the vehicle and the officer is in the car with blood on his shirt."
The tragic scene at the stationhouse was punctuated late Thursday by a gray SUV racing up and the driver screaming, "That's my boy! That's my boy! Let me through!"
An officer lifted the tape sealing off the scene and let the man in.
Word of the high-visibility suicide spread quickly through the ranks.
"We're all a little bit shell-shocked and saddened," said a high-ranking police source.
Another source said there was no indication that Cedeno was suicidal.
"People always say, 'The signs, the signs,' but there were no signs," said the source.
Kelly said it remained unclear what prompted Cedeno to take his own life.
"We have no idea on motive," he said.
