Forty pounds of hard candy laced with marijuana - in pieces every color of the rainbow and sizes ranging from a marble to a small orange - has been seized from a West Chester University apartment, prosecutors say. The candy was seized October 20 from a campus apartment at 842 S. New St., Chester County Deputy District Attorney Patrick Carmody said Monday. Carmody said the police have identified one suspect but made no arrests have been made because investigators are waiting for lab results on the candy. "With Halloween just around the corner, the last thing we want to see is drug-laced candy hitting the streets," he said in a statement. Officials said the candy was wrapped in groups of plastic bags for sale and distribution. Carmody said the police believe the distributor would take the candy to concerts, give out samples and then offer bags for sale to interested buyers.

  • College students, not kids, were the intended buyers but the seizure is still concerning considering its proximity to Halloween, Carmody said. "I think unfortunately Halloween is a time that all of us parents need to be more careful," he said. "I don't believe this was designed for children. But at the same time I'm glad we seized all the drugs." The discovery of the candy was rooted in an on-campus traffic stop by university police officers of a car full of students, according to the statement. "The police then worked backwards from questioning the occupants of the car all the way to the apartment on South New Street," the statement said. tnadolny@phillynews.com 610-313-8205 @TriciaNadolny
