The Oneida Indian Nation slams Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder’s letter to season ticket holders as an example of ‘trying to rewrite the team's history.’
The Oneida Indian Nation has hit back against Washington owner Daniel Snyder in response to a letter he sent to season-ticket holders Wednesday defending the team's 'Redskins' nickname.
Snyder’s letter drew the ire of the Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota Friday because Snyder mentioned in his letter that former coach George Allen consulted with the Red Cloud Athletic Fund in 1971 to design the team's emblem.
"As an organization, Red Cloud Indian School has never — and will never — endorse the use of the name 'Redskins,'" the group said in a statement from its president and vice president. "Like many Native American organizations across the country, members of our staff and extended community find the name offensive."

On Sunday, the Oneida Nation sent out a press release urging Snyder to rewrite his letter to season-ticket holders and criticized Snyder for failing to mention the team's original owner, George Preston Marshall, who was a segregationist.
"Mr. Snyder's list of misrepresentations of Native Americans and examples of trying to rewrite the team's history grows by the day," said Joel Barkin, Vice President of Communications for the Oneida Indian Nation. "These misrepresentations include: highlighting the team's 81 years of history while omitting the key facts that the original owner who named the team was an avowed segregationist and the last team owner to integrate his squad.
"In recent days a tribal entity has come forward disavowing the contention by Snyder that they support the racist mascot and team name.

"Mr. Snyder must set the record straight and immediately send a new letter to season tickets holders highlighting these misrepresentations and omissions. Mr. Snyder should stop trying to rewrite history and instead rewrite his misleading and inaccurate letter and stop pretending that the targets of the R-word slur support his agenda."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the league scheduled a meeting with the Oneida Nation on Nov. 22 at the NFL offices in New York to discuss the use of the Redskins nickname, but the meeting is likely to take place sooner.
