L.A. dad shot to death in front of his son after trying to buy cellphone advertised on Craigslist
Rene Balbuena was shot three times after taking his son with him to a Los Angeles home to buy a cellphone. Balbuena was answering an ad he had seen on Craigslist, accompanied by the 15-year-old boy who was grazed by a bullet.

The victim, Rene Balbuena, was gunned down in front of his teenage son in south Los Angeles, ending a 10-day stretch without a murder in the nation’s second-largest city.
Los Angeles police were searching Monday for two men who opened fire on a car, killing a 41-year-old father and slightly wounding his son, who was in the passenger seat.
The killing ended a 10-day run of no homicides in L.A., police said.

Rene Balbuena was shot in the torso three times by unknown gunmen. His 15-year-old son was treated for a grazed bullet wound.
The man and his son had knocked on the door of a home in south L.A., thinking they were at the house of a person who advertised a cellphone for sale on Craigslist.

But someone told them to go away, and they returned to their car.
A neighbor who did not want to be indentified told KNBC-TV that she heard loud gunshots and then the boy crying for help.

The dad was facedown on the pavement.
“I said 911 was coming, they’re on their way. He said, ‘Please lady, tell me my daddy is going to be alright,’’’ the woman said.
An LAPD spokesman said the killing ended a respite of 10 days in the city without a murder, the longest stretch since 2010.
