LANSING — Food stamp recipients will get fewer dollars in assistance starting on Friday as a temporary boost in benefits expires.
Funding for Michigan's share of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as food stamps, will drop by $183 million in the next year, according to the Michigan League for Public Policy.
The decrease is a result of an expiring stimulus package that provided additional funds during the economic downturn. Further cuts are likely as Congress debates SNAP funding in the Farm Bill.
On average, a family of four with no income will likely see their benefits decrease by about $36 a month, according to the state. The impact on each individual or family depends on income, household size and expenses. Recipients can call (888) 678-8914 to find out their new benefit amount.
Wayne County will see the largest decrease of $54.4 million, accounting for nearly a third of the state's benefits. Macomb, Oakland, Genesee and Kent counties all will see decreases of more than $10 million. Use our database to see how many people receive food assistance in each county and the total dollar amount in cuts.
