The pilot episode, directed by Martin Scorsese, was produced at a cost of $18 million.[3] On September 1, 2009, HBO picked up the series for an additional 11 episodes.[4] The series premiered on September 19, 2010.[5] On October 2, 2012, HBO announced that the series was renewed for a fourth season, which premiered on September 8, 2013.[6] On September 26, 2013, HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fifth season.[7]
Boardwalk Empire has received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its visual style and basis on historical figures, as well as for Buscemi's lead performance.[8] The series has received forty Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series, winning seventeen. The series has also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama in 2011 and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2011 and 2012.
