Should N.J. government flags be lowered for entertainers like James Gandolfini?
TRENTON — When Gov. Chris Christie announced today that he has ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff Monday to honor the late James Gandolfini, it reopened a debate:
Should government flags be lowered for entertainers?
The same question was posed after Christie made the same order after New Jersey natives Clarence Clemons and Whitney Houstondied.
Some say the honor should be reserved for those who served in the military or as public servants.
A Michigan man whose son was killed in duty in Iraq said he burned a New Jersey flag to protest Christie's decision to give Houston the honor last year.
Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Christie, said the governor orders flags lowered for "every service man or woman who is killed in the line of duty."
He added that Christie has authority under state law "to exercise his discretion and executive authority to order flags lowered."
