Judge Wilkins first Black U.S District Judge for the District of Columbia

President Obama recently appointed Judge Robert Leon Wilkins into the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Judge Wilkins is an African American judge who, before being appointed served as U.S district Judge for Washington D.C., was appointed to the second highest court in the U.S.
The announcement took place in the Rose Garden at the White House and was attended by U.S Attorney General Eric Holder, Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarret, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and NAACP Senior Vice President for Advocacy Hilary Shelton among others.
Judge Wilkins is a Muncie, Indiana, native and was was raised there and in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1986 he received his B.S. with graduate honors from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and in 1989 completed his education at Harvard Law School, where he was the editor of Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review from 1989 to 1990. Judge Wilkins served as the Honorable Earl B. Gilliam of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California . Judge Wilkins was credited as “90 Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Last 30 Years.
