'Sham' Sentencing Served Up Frankie Steel As DEA Snitch |
Two years ago, distinguished Brooklyn Federal Judge I. Leo Glasser sentenced a longtime Colombo associate to probation as part of an elaborate charade designed to establish the gangster's credibility and enable him to work undercover for the DEA, Gang Land has learned. The sham sentencing, in which the U.S. Attorney's office and other federal agencies played important roles, worked like a charm. It enabled Frank (Frankie Steel) Pontillo to wear a wire for more than a year. But the overall impact of his work for the DEA seems to have been a bust.
